The Christmas swim at Sennen is quite an event and this year attracted probably a hundred and fifty swimmers and at least as many jealous folk as onlookers. Towards eleven the beach transforms from having a few people to having a huge group, all getting strangely excited. And that excitement transfers to all as the [...]
Sennen Archive
Escalls Chapel, Sennen.
Most people pass Escalls Chapel scores of times when driving to and from Sennen, some people expect that it has been converted into a house, some, including us, use it as a land mark “If you get to Escalls Chapel, you’ve missed the turning”. And just a few go in. We did on Sunday, not [...]
Wonderful winter at Gwenver, Sennen.
This morning it was howling, lashing wind, rain and so exciting, but then this afternoon all had changed again. The sea had calmed (relatively), the winter sun arrived just in time to deliver stunning long shadows across the beach. And I’d taken Amanda’s camera to grab a couple of snaps and a bit of video. [...]
Sennen self catering holidays in the wilds of winter
The weather forecast says there’s storms coming. If what’s howling out there now isn’t a storm then I ought to be worried about what it is! The rain hasn’t got here yet, but the spray off the sea is being blown all the way up to Tregiffian. This morning on the beach the dog was [...]
St Just to Porth Ledden – great little circular walk
11 November. Forecast is awful. West Cornwall supposed to be wet and horrible. And we’re headed west for a few days at home. Yet as we pass Redruth the clouds are breaking up, by Penzance there is a hint of sunshine, and Tregiffian is bathed in gorgous winter sun. We meet friends in St Just [...]
Back to Tregiffian for self catering holiday joy!
Ah, tomorrow night we’ll head back to Tregiffian after far too long away. Fortunately bookings have been brisk, with a flurry of last minute interest. We’ve had to squeeze in some time with friends who were there all week and asked to stay on a bit longer. Yes was our answer – but only if [...]
Last Gwenver Swim This Year?
It was so glorious at lunch time. Polly dog and I headed down to Gwenver for a walk, that then included a swim, and a few photos. With the waves hammering in the beach may have been red flagged if the life guards were on duty, but they finish at the end of September. [...]
Tregiffian, Sennen, that sunset again
It has been a pretty perfect day, a great long walk, home for a bath in the sumptuous bath at New Forge with the evening sun streaming through the window, a Cornish Palm in silhouette against the deep blue sky, that gradually faded to this:
Porthgwarra to Porth Chapel, and a swim with a seal!
This was a short, but beautiful walk with a swim, a climb and a seal – all thrown in! Porthgwarra is a sweet cove down a long and winding little lane that passes through some of the St Aubyn (lairds of St Michael’s Mount) farms before descending to the cottages and car park for the [...]
The First and Last, Sennen. Eating, drinking, dancing!
Having friends stay over was an unexpected pleasure, and then to be treated to dinner just made it better. We’d been walking all day and so the usual stomp up to The First and Last seemed a bit much. It’s only 2 miles and 35 minutes going, coming back can take longer. The dogs went [...]
